When we watch an interview with a famous director, we remain somewhat unsatisfied because it is approached with a journalistic perspective which must reach the largest possible audience resulting in questions to which we already know the answers and which are limited often to their latest work.
It was only recently that I stumbled upon The Director's Chair, created and hosted by Robert Rodriguez, the hour-long documentary series aired on the American channel El Rey from 2014 to 2018!
The concept is very innovative: A director who interviews another director!
And this advantage of having a director as an interviewer makes it possible to have a more relaxed exchange, with slightly more in-depth questions than a traditional interview, which transforms this type of program into a kind of masterclass!
Especially since Robert Rodriguez has already studied and/or worked with some of his guests, so trust is quickly acquired and confidences come more easily.
The list of his guests is very interesting: John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Quentin Tarantino (in two episodes), Francis Ford Coppola, Luis Valdez, Robert Zemeckis, Michael Mann, George Miller, Sylvester Stallone...
Although you can't find all the episodes online, I nevertheless unearthed a playlist on the Internet Archive and on Youtube containing ten episodes.
The series had two seasons and concluded with an interview with Barbra Streisand on November 26th, 2018. Despite my research, I could not find the reasons for the show's cancellation.
Whether you are interested in becoming a filmmaker or you are an amateur filmmaker, these episodes are essential in terms of inspiration and motivation!
